"Celebration of Nature" day

On the 20th of September, Amberley Beach Coast Care hosted a display at the Amberley “Celebration of Nature” service that was organized by the Amberley Combined Churches.

The event was scheduled because 2009 is Australasia’s “Year of Natural Fiber” however the organizing committee broadened that to celebrate all nature in our region, the Hurunui.

About 100 people attended the service. Other displays were also included in the event and demonstrated use of wools, mohair, and flax.

The Coast Care display included information on planned goals, planting programs, and promotions. Information to help those who want to grow native plants at home was also provided.

The stand was attended by Dale McEntee, Biodiversity Ambassador to the Hurunui District Council. The information he was able to give enquirers was very valuable.

It was an excellent day and opportunity for Amberley Beach Coast Care to attract new interest. The beautiful examples of native plants that were displayed around the stall and the Amberley Pavilion (where the service was held) were supplied by Ali & David Robinson of AST~132 Native & Shelter Nursery, 132 Beach Rd, Amberley.

Amberley Beach Cleanup Day

AST~132 Native & Shelter Nursery raffle winners

Amberley Beach Coast Care received another boost to the bank account thanks to Ali & David Robinson of AST~132 Native & Shelter Nursery (on Amberley Beach Rd) who sponsored Coast Care’s latest raffle.

Arthur Burkes supplied the prizes at discounted cost so the winners received even more value for their $2.00 win.

The winners of the ABCC’s “Goals 2009” Garden package raffle are; 1^st- Kate & Terry Burke, regular Aussie visitors to Amberley; 2^nd- Joanne Lapthorthe, C/- of HDC; & 3^rd- Liz Richards, Amberley. Thanks go to everyone who bought a ticket.

AST~132 Native & Shelter Nursery continue to support Coast Care year after year. They have been a primary source for native plants used for the restoration of Amberley Beach’s unique coastal wetlands. Ali & David donate these plants to Coast Care as well as sponsoring the latest raffle.

Each year, usually in June, Amberley Beach Coast Care holds a planting day to continue with this restoration giving people a real opportunity to ‘get involved’ in some environmental activity. Plants are supplied by Trees For Canterbury and AST~132. We usually plant between 600 & 800 new plants each planting day, at least a third coming from Ali & David’s nursery. This year's total is closer to 1000.

If you are landscaping your own place or if you just want a couple of nice, healthy natives in your garden, support the folk who really do support Amberley. Visit AST~132 Native & Shelter Nursery, 132 Amberley Beach Rd; now is the right time to get ready for spring!

Saturday 13 June at 10:30 AM midway between the village and the golf course along the golf course road. Bring your gloves and a shovel or trowel and meet us there.

Barbecue will follow!

Coast Care's New Booth a Success

Amberley Beach Coast Care erected a display booth at the Lion's event in January and many positive comments were received. Coast Care people were on hand all day to answer queries and receive suggestions on future projects.

Amberley Beach Coast Care will be setting up a display during the annual Amberley Lions Amberley Beach Fishing Competition. Visitors can find out what the Coast Care is all about and talk to the volunteers.

Look for us in a tent near the community centre in the domain; we'll be there from 9am until after the prizegiving.
